My Thoughts About the Sesame Street Season Premiere

Behind the Google DoodleWith the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street now behind us, and this season underway, I wanted to share my thoughts about yesterday’s season premiere. Let me preface my thoughts by saying this: It’s been a long time since I watched Sesame Street from start to finish. I’ve watched segments, seen clips, and read reviews, but I hadn’t actually watched the program on TV in 15 years or more.

This was episode 4187. Yes, you read that right. The four thousand, one hundred and eighty-seventh episode. What causes a show, any show, to last that long? I think there are two answers.

Because He Loves to Count Things!

Count von Count as a Google DoodleCount von Count, or just The Count for brevity’s sake, loves to count things! Just ask any Sesame Street viewer to count to 10 and see if you don’t get the numbers in a strangely Draculinean (is that a word?) accent, punctuated with a clap of thunder!

Why Elmo Isn’t Evil

Elmo Google DoodleThere are those that believe that Sesame Street “jumped the shark” when Elmo “took over.” There are those that believe that the show has lost its edge, lost what made it special, now that Elmo is a central character. Today's Google Doodle is Cookie MonsterIn their continuing tribute to Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary, Google has featured Cookie Monster today!

The anniversary has prompted me to consider some of my favorite episodes and sequences from the show. There are a lot to choose from, and sesamestreet.org has a treasure trove of classic and new video clips to watch. For those of you who, like me, haven’t watched the show for awhile, it’s a great way to catch up. For those with younguns of your own who watch Sesame Street, or have recently, it’s wonderful fun to go back and enjoy those classics WE grew up with!

Happy 40th Birthday, Sesame Street!

Happy 40th Birthday Sesame StreetGoogle helped Sesame Street celebrate it’s 40th Birthday today with a rather unusual (but charming) “Google Doodle.” And what better way to celebrate than with the show’s iconic character, Big Bird, providing the ”L” in the word ”Google?”

Forty years?! Wow! Just think about it. For forty years this show has been teaching children to count. To spell. To sing. To recognize letters and colors and shapes.
